The Consequences of a DUI Conviction in California

There are over 200,000 DUI arrests made in California every single year, and this remains one of the most severe charges that a driver will ever face. For those that don’t contact a lawyer in Los Angeles, a conviction will result in a slew of penalties that could haunt a driver for the rest of their life.

A License Suspension
The first thing that will happen after a driver has tested above the legal limit is their license being taken by an officer and sent to the DMV. A DMV hearing will then be held to determine how long the license should be suspended and if any other penalties are needed. This is all carried out as a completely separate process from the trial that will happen at a later time. Repeat offenders can have their license revoked for up to three years and might need to apply for “high risk” insurance.

Court Fines and Fees
You might be surprised to hear that the final cost of a single DUI in California can easily exceed $40,000. In addition to an impounded vehicle, alcohol safety classes, DMV fees, and court fines, drivers can expect to pay thousands of dollars more per year on their insurance once their license suspension is up. For repeat offenders, the penalties will become even more severe, and drivers could be facing a permanent revocation of their license, a lengthy period in jail, and a permanent blemish on their record.
