Contact sports, particularly football, remain to be one of the main causes of traumatic brain injuries. Even minor brain injuries can produce progressive brain illnesses without early intervention. However, for the longest time, the National Football League (NFL) denied the connection between football and the degenerative brain disorder, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Instead, NFL officials insisted that little evidence is present to establish that football causes the development of this disorder.

Recent studies from 2013 onwards, however, have produced compelling evidence that repeated minor head trauma due to years of playing football can cause CTE. This disorder has lasting negative health effects, including cognitive impairment, depression, memory loss, substance abuse, impulsive behavior, executive function problems, and suicidal ideas or behavior. These findings have made a number of football players and their families wary of the long-term price of football fame.
